Here are a few of his thoughts on the River.
Favourite part of the Shannon ?
The Jamestown Canal, it is just spectacular. Victoria Lock is beautiful too.
Favourite place to eat ?
I do love the Cottages in Jamestown for a special occasion and a steak in Cox’s in something I dream about (regularly). On the southern part of the Shannon Larkins in Garrykennedy is another one of my favourite spots.
Best Pubs ?
Luker’s in Shannonbridge is such great fun, I recommend it to all of my customers and they always agree. Carrick on Shannon is a wonderful place to go out too and the people are really friendly. You are never stuck for a friendly conversation in Carrick.
Best Historical Location ?
Has to be the ancient city of Clonmacnoise. I love approaching it on a cruiser, just like the Vikings did.
Favourite Marina ?
I love a nice evening at Terryglass marina. It’s actually one of my spots in the county.
Favourite Cruiser ?
It all depends on how many of us are cruising but I alway go for something with a deck on top. I think it makes the experience better.
Best place for the family ?
Lough Key Forest Park has plenty to do for the whole family from the Boda Borg experience to the Zip Wiring in the treetops, even walking around the park is lovely. The Argina mines are also very interesting.
Favourite Shops ?
My two favourites would have to be the Leitrim Design House in Carrick and the Wilde Irish Chocolates Shop in Tuamgraney. Also in Tuamgraney is the Mckernan Woollen Mills which is also worth visiting.
Best Coffee ?
It really depends where you. On the southern part Simply Delicious in Ballina is as the name says and Café Rose in Portumna is great too. In Carrick, there is only one great place to go and this is Café Lounge. It is one of the best places for coffee in Ireland.
Fishing ?
I’m by no means a fishing expert but I do regularly speak to Terry in the Shannon Fishing Tackle in Jamestown. Terry supplies many of the fishing tackles in Ireland and he is great for information on where to fish, what to fish and how to fish ? My advice is always speak to Terry.
Live Music ?
It has to be Lukers again. Some of the events they stage are fantastic. I try to make it down there every year and Riverfest in June is always great fun. Carrick always has good live music too and so do many of the towns along the Shannon at the weekends.
Best Guinness ?
Nearly every pub in Ireland will claim to have the best Guinness around and the Shannon is no different. I will leave this one up to yourself but I have never had any complaints !
