The charming village of Glasson, also known as the ‘Village of Roses’ is one of the jewels of Ireland’s midlands region. The town can be accessed by any one of four marina’s including Quigleys, Chattersons and the Lake Side marina and it is just a short walk to the town. Glasson is a magnificently picturesque village which is also home to three multi award winning restaurant and bars. These are Grogan’s Bar and Restaurant, The Glasson Village Restaurant and the Wineport Lodge. The village has rapidly gained a reputation as a classic cultural holiday destination throughout Ireland and beyond. Mooring is also available at the harbour of the famous Glasson country house and golf club, which is easily seen from the sheltered inner lake on the south east side of Lough Ree. The village is can be reached on foot and is a 2km stroll from the nearest mooring points. In the centre of the village is the award winning restaurants of The Glasson Village Restaurant and Grogan’s Bar and Restaurant which are located close to each other. Both of these establishments attract visitors from all over Ireland. They offer a great atmosphere as well as a superb food and a trip to Glasson should always be taken advantage of if in the area. You are sure to find a wonderful evening full of great food, fun and entertainment in Glasson and both of these Bar & Restaurants greatly add to the towns alluring appeal. The Village restaurant is famous for seafood and is a member of the B.I.M seafood circle which is a pretigious title. Opposite Grogans the newly opened Villager Bar and restaurant is generating great reviews and is attracting visitors from near and far.
The village is even home to the wonderful and imaginative Glasson Craft shop which stocks a vast array of pieces from local Irish Artists. There is also a pharmacy and a local supermarket making Glasson a vital stop over town for supplies.
For those in an energetic mood are there several beautiful walks in the area including The Walderstown bog walk and Portlick Bay and woods which are also home to the privately owned 11th Century Portlick Castle. There is a popular Equestrian centre nearby too which cater for country side treks and much more.
Glasson is located in Goldsmith country. This is so-named after the famous 18th century Irish writer and poet Oliver Goldsmith who spent his childhood years in the nearby town of Lissoy. Here, the ruins of his homestead can still be seen today. One of Oliver’s most noted poems; ‘The deserted Village’ is thought to be about Glasson.
