One of the most attractive locations along the river Shannon for the angler is downstream from Athlone. Here the Shannon is subject to flooding and the landscape is mostly flat. There are not many good spots for fishing from the banks so to get best results use a boat or cruiser. The Shannon winds through miles of beautiful water meadows and there are plenty of wild flowers and flora and fauna to view. Pike is most common here and the wider stretches of the river are the most fruitful, these include the areas around Clonmacnoise, Long island and where the River Suck and River Brosna join the Shannon.
